Bugs: Harmful or Helpful

An educational Program for K-5th grade to be presented by the pest management industry.

Insects are an often overlooked but important part of our everyday life. Florida educational standards take into account the diversity of animals, including insects. A few of the standards addressed in this educational program include:

Make observations that plants and animals closely resemble their parents, but variations exist among individuals within a population.

Through observation, recognize that all plants and animals, including humans, need the basic necessities of air, water, food, and space.

2 nd

SC.2.L.16.1

Observe and describe major stages in the life cycles of plants and animals, including beans and butterflies.

3 rd

SC.3.L.15.1

 

Classify animals into major groups (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, arthropods, vertebrates and invertebrates, those having live births and those which lay eggs) according to their physical characteristics and behaviors.

SC.4.L.16.4

 

 

SC.4.L.17.4

Compare and contrast the major stages in the life cycles of Florida plants and animals, such as those that undergo incomplete and complete metamorphosis, and flowering and nonflowering seed-bearing plants.

Recognize ways plants and animals, including humans, can impact the environment.

SC.5.L.17.1  

Compare and contrast adaptations displayed by animals and plants that enable them to survive in different environments such as life cycles variations, animal behaviors and physical characteristics.  

This program was developed by the University of Florida School IPM program in partnership with the Florida Pest Management Association with funding through the Entomological Foundation. Presenters using this program in Florida through May of 2010 should follow the instructions on submissions of pre/post exams and survey forms. Each FPMA region has received an education kit with insect models, stickers and handouts. To use the materials, please contact your FPMA region director or download the information below.
