incorporate the latest advances in "energy-efficient" technology. These advances include both T8 lamps and electronic ballasts. These items are becoming industry standards following the implementation of EPACT (the United States National Energy Security Act of 1992) which mandates their eventual use.

T8 lamps differ most notably from standard T12 lamps by their diameter size; T8 lamps are "slimmer" than T12 lamps. The reduced diameter allows a lamp to operate on less energy while also reducing the amount of chemicals, minerals and mercury used in the lamp. This results in lower operating costs and minimizes negative impacts on landfills and groundwaters.

Electronic ballasts differ from conventional magnetic ballasts by converting 60 Hz alternating current of input power to direct current. This direct current is then inverted back to an alternating current at frequencies between 20 and 60 kHz to power the lamp. Additionally, electronic ballasts have lower internal losses than magnetic ballasts. And, because of increased phosphor excitation, light output is increased from 8% to 15%. This translates into greater attraction power while reducing over-all operating costs.

The back-plate accessory should be used if the unit is to be wall mounted or removed if the unit is to be ceiling-hung or bracket-mounted.
